Cal y Canto Teatro began its professional work in 2002. Their personal aesthetic, especially in visual theater, is the result of the bet of the founding members, Ana and Marcos, for a work of own creation.
In the evolution of Cal y Canto, their shows have invented new languages that surprise the audience. based on what they call The Dance of Objects: A scenic vision with the elements as protagonists, which shape each of the company’s productions.
Research in the world of kites, where they have created their own imagery and the creation of site-specific shows such as Lost Dog, which takes place inside a shanty-house. Their works immerse the viewer in stories that touch them emotionally and transform their perception of theatrical space.
Thanks to these creations, their performances have been featured festivals in more than 26 countries around the world.
The name of the company Cal y Canto means in spanish “closed under lock” and refers us to an artistic hermeticism that is resolved with each new creation.

Ana Ortega (Burgos 1983)
From a very young age, she specialized in movement-based arts and object theatre. In 2002, together with Marcos Castro, she founded the company Cal y Canto. It was in street theatre that her professional career gained recognition, as her productions began to be programmed at major international festivals, touring more than 26 countries worldwide to date.
From her creation space, “La Magnética,” located in an industrial estate in the city of Burgos, she has woven a network of stage collaborations that has become a reference point in Castilla y León for research and development in the live arts. This is something highly unusual, given that it is a self-managed space situated on the cultural periphery.
She has received several awards and distinctions, including the FETEN Award 2017, Best Production at the Alcides Moreno Awards, and was a finalist for the 2019 MAX Awards with Perro Perdido.
She holds a diploma in Social Education and has always felt the need to engage new audiences in her work, especially those most vulnerable. Cultural management is another facet of her career, coordinating European projects such as “Los Encuentros Trashumantes” as well as national and international tours.
